About Taxco and their craftsman heritage:

Taxco has been the origin of finely crafted metalwork pieces for centuries. A small mountain town a few hour's drive from Mexico City, Taxco has a history closely linked to silver. Aztec Indians exacted silver as tribute from Taxquenians in pre-Columbian times when the culture and aesthetics of metal smithing were already thriving in the area. After the conquest, the Spaniards mined the area for silver for three centuries, yet the local population did not benefit from their mineral wealth and skilled craftsmanship until after the Mexican Revolution in 1910, an event that effectively created a break with European traditions. An explosion of creativity took place after the Revolution initiated by a group of Mexican and North American artists and intellectuals.

One of these North Americans was William Spratling, an artist and professor of architecture at Tulane University. He arrived in Mexico in the 1920s and through friends was introduced to a circle of luminaries: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Rufino Tamayo, Edward Weston, and many others. He became fascinated with Mexico and left Tulane and the U.S. altogether in 1928. Spratling settled in Taxco with an idea his new friends encouraged him to pursue. He wanted to begin using silver mined in Taxco to produce Mexican articles in that metal which could be sold creating a livelihood for Taxco's people. His resulting studio was a great success. He taught and inspired many Mexican artisans whose families and students are today producing much of the fine Mexican sterling jewelry available in the world marketplace.
